What is a Ceramic Coating?

What is a Ceramic Coating?

Years ago, paste wax was the go-to solution for enhancing your car’s shine and protecting the paint from elements like rain, bird droppings, and dirt.

Fast forward 20 years, and thanks to advancements in science, we now have a more durable and superior option: ceramic coatings.

Unlike the old “wax-on, wax-off” method, ceramic coating is a semi-permanent liquid layer that bonds to your vehicle’s surface.

Often called a “sacrificial” layer, it shields your paint by absorbing environmental elements like rain, dirt, and snow, providing long-lasting protection.

Think of it this way: Wax is like a tent protecting you in the woods, while ceramic coating is like a brick house. Both offer defense against the elements, but ceramic coating is on another level.

The Benefits of a Ceramic Coating

A lot of coating companies make some bold claims about what their product can do. While there’s some truth to them, I prefer not to oversell the benefits.

Here are the real advantages you’ll get with a ceramic coating:

👍🏽 Provides a durable layer of protection that lasts 3 to 6 years

👍🏽 Only needs to be applied once—no reapplying every few months like wax

👍🏽 Delivers an unmatched deep gloss that outshines wax or sealants

👍🏽 Offers superior hydrophobic properties, keeping your car cleaner and easier to wash

👍🏽 Can be applied to paint, glass, wheels, vinyl, and paint protection film

Before applying the coating, your car must be properly prepped and corrected with one of our paint correction services. Skipping this step means you won’t fully benefit from the coating.

This is what separates a professional ceramic coating installer from the rest. If it’s not installed correctly, you’ll end up with smudges or “high spots” where the coating wasn’t wiped off in time, leaving unsightly marks.

Common Myths About Ceramic Coatings

Yes, ceramic coatings are long-lasting and durable, but that doesn’t mean you can treat your vehicle however you want and expect the coating to handle it all.

It’s important to understand the limitations of what a ceramic coating can protect against. Too often, we see customers overestimate the coating’s protection, only to be disappointed when they notice swirls or etching in their paint.

A ceramic coating will not make your paint scratch-proof. When we say it resists light swirls and scratches, we mean very light ones, such as those that might occur during a proper wash or dry.

If you drag a dirty, dry wash mitt across the paint, you will scratch it. If you rub your hand or leg across the surface, you will scratch it.

The coating also doesn’t protect against rock chips. The only true solution for that level of protection is paint protection film (PPF). No matter how many layers of wax or ceramic coating you apply, it won’t stop a rock from damaging your vehicle.

Additionally, the coating requires regular maintenance to last its full lifespan. Like anything else, if you don’t take care of it, it will degrade over time.

To get the most out of your coating, you need to properly wash, dry, and boost it. A coating designed to last 6 years could start breaking down by year 3 if it’s not maintained properly.

Ceramic Coating FAQs

Do you have a shop?

No, we don’t have a physical shop, but we’re fully mobile! We can bring all our services to you. If you have a garage, we can store the vehicle there during the curing process. If not, we have a portable canopy that we can leave overnight to ensure the coating is properly protected during the initial curing period.

Is ceramic coating the best protection for my paint?

Ceramic coatings provide outstanding protection and a high level of gloss. While no coating can make your paint completely scratch-proof, ceramic coatings offer excellent durability and resistance to swirls, light scratches, and environmental contaminants like dirt, bird droppings, and road grime. It’s one of the best options for long-term protection and keeping your vehicle looking its best.

Can I wash my car after the coating is installed?

Once the coating is applied, the vehicle should stay dry for the first 48 hours to allow it to fully cure. We recommend avoiding washing your car for the first two weeks. To make things easier, your first wash after the coating is on us so we can check how it’s holding up.

Can ceramic coating replace my clear coat?

No, ceramic coating cannot fix issues like chipping or fading from clear coat failure. If your clear coat is damaged, a repaint is the only solution.

Can I get the coating without the prep work or paint correction?

We do not apply coatings without the proper prep work and paint correction. Without those steps, you won’t experience the full benefits of the ceramic coating, so we always ensure your vehicle is thoroughly prepared before applying it.
